"Reliable, trustworthy support for families around birth and the postpartum period is of the essence. In another time and place the "village" mentality prevailed, and birth and child-rearing were shared experiences among members of communities. Most of us do not have those kinds of resources at our disposal any longer making it critical that we create systems that provide that support."
- Megan Bloom, Ph.D, Certified Birth Doula, Charlottesville

“As the Director of Family Support at ReadyKids, I have seen the true impact that Nearby Baby can have in the lives of moms, babies, and families. Nearby Baby has been able to offer support to some of the moms that are a part of the Healthy Families program at ReadyKids. The moms that they worked with had nothing but good things to say about the Nearby Baby doulas. They were grateful that they had access to the kind of support that the doulas offered. These moms would never have been able to afford a post-partum doula and it is only because of Nearby Baby that they were able to receive the vital support that they (and quite frankly every mom) needs after having a baby. It has been wonderful to be able to have Nearby Baby as a trusted resource that we can partner with in order to better serve the women in our community.

“As a community health nurse working with the Latinx population, I see the grief that many of my clients face as they come to terms with their own mother/maternal figure not being present for their delivery and cuarentena (forty day postpartum period dedicated to mom and baby). Nothing can replace the support of a mother, but having Nearby Baby as an ally during this incredibly vulnerable period is vital for our community. Many resources are unattainable for my clients because of cost, transportation, or residential status. To have a resource like Nearby Baby where none of those factors come into play makes this support accessible to all.
Child Health Partnership, the organization where I work, provides prenatal and postpartum support to low income families. We sometimes face limitations to how often we can see our clients based on what our work looks like, the number of families that we serve, and other commitments. Ideally, every mom should have support several times a week in the first few weeks to help with breastfeeding, establishing a new normal, and discussing baby norms. Though I cannot provide that type of intensive support, knowing that Nearby Baby is in the home to check up on baby/mom (in a more intimate way) is always a comfort. I am very grateful for the relationship that I have with Erin and feel comfortable asking for her to follow-up with something and knowing that she will reach out if there is a concern. Erin goes above and beyond to ensure that moms are cared for holistically and individually. She has supported a number of my clients (first time moms, first deliveries in the US, moms with seven children) and I’ve heard from every client how much they valued her support and would recommend Nearby Baby to friends/family. As a provider, I’m incredibly grateful to work closely with Nearby Baby and to have so many clients benefit from their services.
